PETALING JAYA: The stock market rebounded strongly yesterday with the KL Composite Index (KLCI)
surging close to 30 points to 1,139, its highest single-day gain since March. A total of 656.4 million shares changed hands, valued at some RM1.2bil.
Regional bourses also staged a healthy rebound with gains mainly driven by the fall in the price of crude oil on Tuesday. At press time yesterday, crude oil prices were still declining.
Yesterday, Singapore’s Straits Times Index jumped 3%, the Kospi Index rose almost 2%, the Hang Seng Index gained 2.7% while the Nikkei 225 improved nearly 1%.

Malaysia expects to attract ringgit 9 billion ($2.8 billion) of investments from Gulf states in the next 10 years, attracting oil money diverted from the West since September 11, 2001, officials said yesterday.
Jalilah Baba, head of Malaysia’s investment promotion body Mida, said the country received ringgit 4.5bn worth of Gulf investments between 1980 and May this year. “Based on some of the projects in the pipeline, I’m confident the amount of investment will be much bigger than ringgit 4.5bn. It could be more than double,” Jalilah said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian markets surged in early trade on Thursday, with the key indices up between 1.5% and 2.3%, boosted by the strong close on Wall Street while the KLCI continued its advance, aided by gains in DiGi, MISC and Sime Darby.
At 10am, the KLCI was up 8.90 points to 1,262.54. Turnover was 131.13 million shares valued at RM228.98mil. There were 213 gainers, 91 losers while 191 counters were unchanged.
Citigroup Equity Research said the Malaysian market was bottoming out and it set its year-end target for the KLCI at 1,449. It said discounting the global equities meltdown, the market was hit by the shocking 12th General Election results where the ruling coalition lost its two-thirds majority.
